Solved Case Recognition
Congratulations to Sergeant John Stires of the Chula Vista
Police Department for being the first examiner recognized by NACVSA for his work
with the CVSA. The results of the case were fairly typical of the experience of
most examiners; the results of the CVSA examination were used to confront the
suspect which resulted in admissions. What was not typical was a ploy by the
defense before trial. The defense hired a rather pricey “expert” whose
intention was to tell the jury that the CVSA was nothing more than a form of
coercion which forced their client to say something that wasn’t true. The judge
after a hearing so severely limited the scope as to what the expert could
testify to that the defense abandoned the strategy. Sergeant Stires had
prepared himself to testify on behalf of the use of the CVSA and was a little
disappointed that he didn’t get the chance to give the hired gun from the
defense a lesson in how to obtain the truth. Congratulations to Sergeant Stires
for not only solving the case but for his trial preparation as well.
Sergeant Stires will receive a certificate of recognition
and a voucher to attend an advanced training class tuition free.
If you have an interesting case or experience using the
CVSA please forward it to us so that we can post it on the website and you will
also be considered for special recognition.
